First Camp Trip of 2018 and Opening Day of Trout

The end of March brought our first (and possibly coldest) camping trip of the season.  We stayed close to home, as we usually do for the start of the season, and revisited Little Buffalo State Park.  The park is our close-to-home favorite, far enough away to feel like you’ve gotten away to the mountains but close enough for short weekend trips.  Brock did plenty of pre-planning, marking a Google map with favorite fishing holes and streams that were stocked by the Sportsmans’ Association.  We went back and forth a bit about whether to set an alarm for Friday morning and leave as the sun rises or wake up naturally and get a slower start to day.  Anyone who knows me knows that I will always choose the latter.  I can rise and I can shine but rarely can I do both at the same time.  We decided against the alarm clock but still headed out at a decent time, even forgoing coffee and breakfast at home so that we could stop at Tim Horton’s. Except Tim Horton’s turned out to be a truck stop; This is like the 3rd time this has happened so it’s more of a comical annoyance than an actual disappointment.

Once we loaded up on coffee and a donut (or 12) we were on our merry way to scope out some fishing grounds for Saturday’s opening day of trout season.  So many of the areas we drove to were posted but we did finally stumble across a nice stretch of Buffalo Creek that we hadn’t fished before, it had  nice open areas and deep holes that were perfect for the freshly stocked trout to hide.  We knew it would probably be a popular spot for opening day but with plenty of room to spread out we decided we would give it a try anyway.

Saturday morning started off with a crash, quite literally.  Our brand new french press took a tumble off of the picnic table and shattered (sorry, mom!).  We ended up heading off to Espresso Yourself in Newport to grab a quick cup of coffee for Brock and a hazelnut latte for me.  Once we were caffeinated it was time to get serious about catching some fish.  Brock caught the first (and second) fish of the day.   By the end of opening day Brock caught 6 fish and I trailed behind him with a total of 3 fish.  We released everything we caught that day since we had packed plenty of food for our camp trip.

All in all, we had a good trip despite the cold temps and below average “fish-on” moments!
